FAQs in Silicone Sheet application - Answered
This is a compilation of my answers to my YouTube video "How to apply silicone sheet to scars." |
Can I use Silicone gel sheets to improve pigmentation?
A one-month-old surgical scar is still in the early remodelling phase of healing. At this stage, the tissue is sensitive, and improper application could lead to irritation or other complications.Several critical safety concerns arise with DIY medical advice in the post-operative healing process. Without a physical exam, it is not possible to assess the depth of the incision, the type of sutures used, or the current state of the tissue. If the scar is deep, it may require additional medical intervention. Therefore, DIY use of silicone sheets may be inappropriate without first consulting a dermatologist or your surgeon.Always seek professional evaluation to determine if and when silicone sheets are suitable for your specific scar. Self-treatment risks wasting time and resources or potentially undertreating the condition.
Who can I consult for my scar?
For initial diagnosis and treatment, a dermatologist is usually the most appropriate specialist. After examining you, a dermatologist may refer you to a plastic surgeon if the scar is large or deep or limiting joint movements. In this video, I have talked about finding a registered and qualified dermatologist through an online search in India.

Do I need to remove hair around the keloids?
Dense, thick hair surrounding a scar can interfere with the proper adhesion and effectiveness of silicone gel sheets. Sometimes a keloid can have ingrown hair, which can be picked up by a dermatologist, and it requires medical attention to prevent further scarring. If your hair is not coiled or growing into the keloid, you can carefully manage thick or long hair by trimming it with blunt scissors—never pull or cut it close to the skin. Always avoid aggressive hair removal methods such as shaving or waxing near the affected area, as it can irritate the skin and worsen pain.
How long does a silicone sheet last?
If you maintain (wash), store, and handle properly, it should last between 2 and 3 months.
